Come join us for the first annual Cycle of Hope for Africa!
 

Ride Information
Seeds of Hope International Partnerships first Cycle of Hope for Africa will take place on November 14th, 2009.  This fun day of bike riding will take place in beautiful and historic San Luis Obispo, CA.  There is a ride for advanced cyclists through breath-taking Edna Valley to Lake Lopez (35 miles) and a ride for beginners or families through historic San Luis Obispo (13 miles).
Upon returning to Mission Plaza everyone will be treated to a post-ride party with live music, lunch, educational & vendor booths, children activities, and an award ceremony.  Every participant will receive a goody bag with a commemorative T-shirt and fun items donated by our sponsors.  This event is for everyone who enjoys bike riding, from experienced cyclists to families who just like to cruise, and of course anyone who wants to support change in Africa!
The advanced ride begins at 8:30am and the family/beginner ride begins at 10:15am.  The post-ride celebration will run from 10:45am to 1:30pm.  All are welcome to join us for the post-event!

A Bike Ride for Hope
Family-friendly November 14th event in the city of San Luis Obispo

The first Cycle of Hope for Africa event presented by Seeds of Hope International Partnerships (SHIP) will be held on November 14, 2009.  The activities start at 8:30 AM at the San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza.  The advanced course continues through San Luis Obispo to Lopez Lake and back.  The family/beginner course takes riders through historic SLO.

Why
Objectives for the Cycle of Hope for Africa:
Excite: create a rallying point for people with interest in SHIP and the humanitarian & social justice issues in Africa.
Educate: teach people how they can use their passions, abilities and talents to help people in need.
Encourage: inspire individuals and the community to take innovative and creative action to benefit SHIP.
Engage: enlist people in raising funds and awareness for SHIP.

Awards
Awards will be given to the individual and team who have raised the most money, the largest team, and the most creative team.

Post-Race Celebration
After the bike ride, mission plaza will be filled with live music, sponsor booths, food booths, educational booths, and more.  Bring extra cash to purchase food and other items for sale that will benefit our cause!

Courses
Enjoy but be Careful!
Cycle of Hope is a fun ride not a race.  All participants must follow traffic laws and use bike lanes where available.  Please pass other cyclists with caution!  We have designed two courses for this event so everyone at all skill levels can participate.  See the course descriptions below and choose the right course for you!  There will be mile markers along the advanced route and historical markers at each stop of the beginner route so riders can measure their progress.
If participants become dehydrated, sustain an injury or just need a break, they can take advantage of the pit stop locations.

Advanced Ride Course—35 miles
Start at the Mission Plaza, exiting Monterey St towards Broad St, left on Broad St, Left on Marsh St, Right on Johnson Ave, Left on Orcutt Rd, keep left on Orcutt Rd, left on Lopez Dr, (Pit Stop at Biddle Regional Park), continue to Lopez Lake.  Turn around point at Hi Mountain Rd. (optional extended route up Hi Mountain Rd.)
Return: West on Lopez Dr, right on Orcutt Rd, left on tiffany Ranch Rd, right on Corbett Canyon Rd, right on Edna Rd, straight on Broad St, right on Monterey St into Mission Plaza for Finish!

Volunteers
Cycle of Hope for Africa would not be possible without the help of a substantial team of volunteers.  From making sure participants get registered to serving lunch, volunteers are vital to the success of this very special event.
If you are unable to ride in the event but would like to support the fight against poverty and disease in Africa, there are many event volunteering opportunities at Cycle of Hope for Africa. For more information, please contact the Seeds of Hope Office at (805) 202-8456 or at events@sohip.org.
Volunteer tasks include, but are not limited to:

· Distributing event posters and sponsorship packets to businesses
· Promoting the event at the Seeds of Hope booth at Farmers Market in San Luis Obispo
· Stuffing event goody bags
· Manning the pit stop station on event day
· Cheering runners as they cross the finish line
· Setting up mile and historic markers
· Staffing the registration area
· Serving lunch
· Setting up the stage & sound system
· Decorating the event area
· Cleaning up after the event
